I finally installed Opera Mini on my SonyEricsson P910i and boy am I impressed. From what I can see, it makes use of a proxy to convert regular sites into a form more suitable for mobile browsing, both in terms of download size and display size. The results are very impressive – sites load much faster than in the regular Mobile Opera and the display is superior – Mini even uses anti-aliased fonts.

According to the Opera site, Mini is only available in certain countries, but I haven’t had any problems using it in South Africa. To install, go to http://mini.opera.com on your phone and you’ll be offered the link to download and install it. A wide variety of phones are supported – it even works acceptably on my wife’s T610i.

One concern relates to security. The connection between the mobile device and the Opera proxies isn’t encrypted, but it appears that the proxies support encryption. This means that one could access sites that require SSL (eg, to do online banking), but the connection between the mobile and Opera would not be encrypted. There is a warning when accessing such sites, but it would be better if encryption were supported on high memory devices like the P910i.
